Google Ads

A Google Ads specialist for small businesses that need leads now

Search advertising is the fastest way to find out whether people want what you sell. It is also the fastest way to spend money on people who were never going to buy. The difference is almost entirely structure and discipline.

Is this you?

Any of these sound familiar

Four problems account for most wasted spend, and none of them are about bidding.

  • Clicks arrive, enquiries do not

People are searching to read, not to buy, or the page is asking for too much.

  • You cannot tell which clicks worked

Conversion tracking fires on page views, so automated bidding is optimising toward the wrong thing.

  • You are paying for the wrong searches

No negative list, so budget goes to "free", "jobs", "salary", "DIY" and competitor names.

  • Every ad points at your homepage

The click you paid for lands on eight services instead of the one it asked about.

My approach

Where small budgets are usually lost

I have audited a lot of accounts. The same four problems account for most of the waste, and none of them are about bidding.

Get conversion tracking right before spending anything

If you cannot tell which clicks became enquiries, every later decision is guesswork, and Google’s automated bidding is optimizing toward the wrong thing. Before a campaign goes live I make sure conversions fire only on real outcomes: a submitted form, a phone call over a threshold length, a completed booking. Not a page view. Not every click on a phone link. This is the single most common thing I find broken.

Buyer intent beats search volume

"Emergency plumber near me" and "how to fix a leaking tap" are both plumbing searches. One is a customer and one is reading. On a small budget you want the first and none of the second. That means going after specific, often lower-volume terms where the person has already decided to buy.

Negative keywords are your actual budget control

Modern match types are loose, so without a negative list you will pay for searches containing "free", "jobs", "salary", "DIY", and competitor names. I review the search terms report weekly early on, because that report shows what people really typed rather than what you hoped they would.

The landing page is part of the ad

Sending every ad to your homepage wastes the click you just paid for. The page should continue the sentence the ad started, same service, same location, same offer, and ask for one thing. This is usually the cheapest improvement available in an underperforming account.

How I work

The process, and how long it takes

Search campaigns can be live within a week or two. The first month is mostly about learning what your real search terms are.

1of 5 · Week 1

  1. Week 1

    Audit or clean setup

If there is an existing account, I find where money is leaking. If not, we start clean: conversion tracking, account structure, and a keyword set built around what buyers actually type.

  2. Week 1–2

Build campaigns and write the ads

Tightly themed ad groups so the ad matches the search, ad copy written against the intent behind each term, and a starting negative list built before launch rather than after the money is gone.

  3. Week 2

    Check the landing pages

I review where each ad points and flag anything that will not convert. Sometimes this means building or reworking a page, a great campaign into a bad page is money lit on fire.

  4. Weeks 3–6

Read the search terms and cut

The real work. Weekly review of what people actually searched, negatives added, bids adjusted, weak ads replaced. Most of the improvement in a small account comes from this stage.

  5. Ongoing

    Report in leads, not clicks

Cost per qualified enquiry, which campaigns produce them, and what to do next month. If a campaign is not earning its place, I will tell you to turn it off.

What you end up with

  • Conversion tracking configured and verified end to end
  • Campaign and ad group structure built around buyer intent
  • Ad copy written per ad group, not one set reused
  • Negative keyword list, maintained weekly at first
  • Landing page review with specific recommendations
  • Monthly reporting in cost per enquiry, not impressions

Common questions

What people ask before hiring me

Still unanswered? Send me a message. I read every one myself.

How much should a small business spend on Google Ads?

Enough to gather data in your market, which depends entirely on what a click costs in your industry, that ranges from under a dollar to well over fifty. The useful way to think about it is backwards: what is a customer worth, how many enquiries become customers, and therefore what can you afford per enquiry? If that math does not work at your local click prices, I will tell you before you spend, not after.

Why are my Google Ads getting clicks but no conversions?

Usually one of three things. The searches are informational rather than commercial, so people were never going to buy. The landing page does not match the ad or asks for too much. Or conversions are happening and simply are not being tracked. I check tracking first, because it is the cheapest to rule out and the most often wrong.

Should I use Performance Max?

Sometimes, but rarely as a small account’s first move. Performance Max hands targeting to Google’s automation across every surface, which needs conversion data to work and gives you limited visibility into where the money went. Start with search campaigns you can see and control. Once conversions are flowing reliably, Performance Max is worth testing alongside, not instead of, what already works.

Do I need a separate landing page for ads?

Often, yes. Not always a new page, sometimes the existing service page is fine. What matters is that the page continues the ad and asks for one action. If your ad promises emergency service in one city and the page is a general homepage listing eight services, you will pay for clicks that leave.

How quickly will I see results from Google Ads?

Clicks arrive the day you launch. Reliable conclusions take longer, usually four to six weeks, because the first weeks are spent discovering which real searches trigger your ads and cutting the ones that do not belong. Judging an account in week one is judging it before it has been tuned.

Will you manage the account or set it up and hand it over?

Either. Some clients want ongoing management; others want it built properly, then run it themselves with a check-in. Handover includes the structure, the negative list, and what to look at weekly. The account is yours in both cases, always keep ownership of your own ads account.

Can you fix an account someone else set up?

Yes, and that is a lot of what I do. The audit is the same either way: check tracking, read the search terms report, look at what structure exists. Frequently the account is not badly built, it is simply unattended, and nobody has looked at what people are actually searching in months.

Spending on ads without knowing what works?

Give me read access to your account and I will tell you where the money is going. If the answer is that it is being spent well, that is a fine answer too.
