My Unforgettable Experience at Tanguar Haor, Sunamganj

I recently visited Tanguar Haor in Sunamganj, Bangladesh, and it was an experience I’ll cherish forever. The endless water, the hills in a row, the clear blue sky, and the clouds playing hide and seek—Tanguar Haor is a name for all these beauties. In our busy lives, we often forget to pause and breathe. I always crave a break from daily life, and that’s why I decided to visit Tanguar Haor.

I had no idea what to expect, but what I saw there was worth remembering for a lifetime. The haor is located in Tahirpur Upazila of Sunamganj district. If you’re near Sylhet or Sunamganj, you can easily visit in a day. But the main attraction is to explore the haor by boat and enjoy the solitude at night. I went with a tour group, and we started our journey from Dhaka’s Fakirapul bus counter by Hanif bus. Just a heads up, the service and road conditions were not great.

Views from the Boat

Small patches of land amidst the water, with one or two houses on them. Naturally, boats are the only means of transport here, so every house has a boat tied in front. The whole scene looked like a painting.

Places to See

We visited several places like Barikka Tila, Jadukata River, Watch Tower, Shreepur Bazaar, Shimul Garden, Niladri Lake, and Lakhmachhara waterfall. The view from the Watch Tower was breathtaking, covering the entire haor area. We even took a dip in the water, and those who couldn’t swim wore life jackets.

Evening and Night

In the evening, we all sat on the boat’s roof, chatting and heading to Shreepur Bazaar for snacks. The sunset was magical, and the cool breeze made it even more special. We stayed in a cottage at night, and the sky was so clear that it felt like a fair of stars.

Important Tips

  • Always carry a life jacket, whether you can swim or not.
  • Be careful at Niladri Lake; it’s very deep due to stone extraction.
  • Keep a bin for waste on your boat and don’t litter in the haor.
  • If possible, plan your trip on a Tuesday when the Tekherghat market is open.
  • If you have extra time, you can visit Hasan Raja’s house and museum in Sunamganj town.

I hope my experience will help you in planning your trip to Tanguar Haor. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask me. I’ll try my best to help you out with my experience.

Take care, and I’ll be back soon with stories from another exciting place. Allah Hafez! 🙂
